Make a DVD Portfolio using iDVD

PROJECT: DVD Portfolio

Create your own DVD Portfolio including:

1. Five different original images for menu backgrounds.

2. One or more original menu musical scores of loops or student written material.

3. Four original animations for submenu buttons.

4. Eight original images created in class reflecting the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.

5. Eight voiceover descriptions, one for each image.

6. Three original digital video projects.

7. Three voiceover descriptions, one for each video project.

8. A video resume.

9. Personal information about your favorites, hobbies, and future goals.

Part A: Design DVD Menus

1. Storyboard the layout and connectivity of 5 DVD Menus: p((. • Main Menu

MMCP Semester 1 pictures Submenu

MMCP Semester 2 movies Submenu

• Advanced Multimedia work Submenu

• Personal Information Submenu

2. Choose an overall design for the DVD that includes attention to fonts, color choice, layout, and button styles and transitions.

3. Remember to always include a BACK button.

4. DO NOT use any previously created theme.

PART B: Portfolio Setup

1. Create a new folder in your documents folder. Name this new folder “yourname_portfolio”.

2. Create a new subfolder within this folder and name it “media.” You’ll use this subfolder later to hold your pictures.

Menu Backgrounds

1. Create 5 original background images (approx. 720p x 480p) for your DVD menus.

2. Name each file:

• main_image

• pictures_image

• movies_image

• advanced_image

• information_image

3. Save each file into the “media” folder.

Button Animations

1. Create 4 animations for buttons. Name these animations: p((. • pictures_animation

• movies_animation

• advanced_animation

• information_animation

2. Save each file into the “media” folder.

Musical Score

1. Using either a series of prerecorded loops or your own self-written music, create a score for your menus.

2. Menu musical scores should be no longer than 30 seconds.

3. Save the file as “menu_score” into the “media” folder.

Part C: Build your DVD Portfolio

1. Open iDVD.

2. Select Create a new Project.

3. Save the file as “yourname_dvd” into your “yourname_portfolio” folder in your documents folder.

DVD Setup

1. Click the Themes button.

2. Select one of the existing themes for your project. You may select a widescreen (16:9) theme from the 6.0 Themes or a full screen (4:3) theme from the 5.0 or 4.0 theme sets. Some themes have multiple page templates that you may mix and match.

Menu 1: “Main Menu”

1. This menu is the central hub of the project and includes links to four major submenus.

2. Title this menu “Main Menu”

3. Place your image called “main_image” on this menu.

4. Insert your musical score file called “menu_score” on this menu.

5. Insert a return to main menu button on this menu.

6. Insert a text box and type your name, date, and period number on this menu.

7. Insert another text box and write a one-paragraph overview of the information that will be included in this DVD. Write in the first person.

Example:

Hi! Welcome to my Multimedia Portfolio. Within these Menus you will find lots of great information about me. Feel free to click around and check it out. You can click any one of these buttons to get started. Etc.

8. Include any other information you want people to know about you and your work on this page.

Insert four submenu buttons: p(((. • pictures_menu

• movies_menu

• advanced_menu

• information_menu

10. Select a transition for each submenu button.

11. Insert the four animations you created into the four submenu buttons:

• pictures_animation

• movies_animation

• advanced_animation

• information_animation

12. Save your file.

Menu 2: “My Pictures.”

1. Go to the Pictures submenu.

2. This menu includes eight thumbnail links to eight individual picture slideshows.

3. Title this menu “My Pictures.”

4. Place your image called “pictures_image” on this menu.

5. Insert your musical score file called “menu_score” on this menu.

6. Insert a return to main menu button on this menu.

7. Insert a text box and write a one-paragraph overview of the buttons and links that are included in this menu.

8. Select eight of your digital image project files. Include the your original CD cover assignment as one of these files.

9. Move the selected files into your “images” folder.

10. Make a thumbnail version (25%) of each image.

11. Save each thumbnail image adding “_tn” to the end of each file name into your “images” folder.

12. Insert 8 submenu buttons onto the pictures menu.

13. Select a transition for each submenu button.

14. Title each submenu with the title of the picture. If the picture has no title, give it one now.

15. Place the appropriate 8 thumbnails into these eight cells.

16. Link the thumbnails to:

8 Picture Slideshows

17. Each slideshow will contain one full-size image.

18. Write a brief (1 paragraph) description of how you created each one of these files. Include:

An explanation of the original assignment.

A description of the tools and media used to create the picture.

How you used the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.

What you are trying to communicate in the picture.

19. Include the text of each paragraph with each picture along with the picture’s title.

20. Record yourself reading this paragraph description for each image.

21. Save each recorded voiceover audio file into the “media” as “title_vo”

22. Insert the appropriate voiceover audio description file into each slideshow.

23. Set the timing of each slideshow to not exceed the length of the recorded voiceover.

24. Include each of these picture files in the DVD-ROM portion of your final DVD.

25. Save the file.

Menu 3 “My Movies”

1. Go to the Movies submenu.

2. This menu includes three button links to three movie submenus.

3. Title this menu “My Movies.”

4. Place your image called “movies_image” on this menu.

5. Insert your musical score file called “menu_score” on this menu.

6. Insert a return to main menu button on this menu.

7. Insert a text box and write a one-paragraph overview of the buttons and links that are included in this menu.

8. Insert three submenu buttons.

9. Select a transition for each submenu button.

10. Insert the appropriate movie clip into each submenu button link to:

3 Movie Submenus

11. Each Movie submenu will include a button link to one movie file.

12. Insert a text box and write a brief (1 paragraph) description of how you created each one of these files. Include:

An explanation of the original assignment.

A description of the tools and media used to create the movie.

How you used the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.

What you are trying to communicate in the movie.

Include the text of each paragraph with each movie along with the movie’s title.

Record yourself reading this paragraph description for each movie.

Save each recorded voiceover audio file into the “media” as “title_vo”

Insert the appropriate voiceover audio description file into each movie submenu.

Set the timing of each menu to not exceed the length of the recorded voiceover.

Insert a button linking back to the previous menu.

Include each of these movie files in the DVD-ROM portion of your final DVD.

Save the file.

Menu 4 “My ADVANCED WORK.”

1. This Menu is going to be completed during the Advanced Multimedia course.

2. For now, put an animation for “under construction” or “coming soon” on this menu.

3. If you have other work you’d like to include now, you may place it on this menu.

4. Title this menu “My Advanced Work.”

5. Place your image called “advanced_image” on this menu.

6. Insert your musical score file called “menu_score” on this menu.

7. Insert a return to main menu button on this menu.

8. Save the file.

Menu 5: “My Information.”

1. Go to the Information submenu.

2. This menu includes three text links to three submenus.

3. Title this menu “My Information.”

4. Place your image called “information_image” on this menu.

5. Insert your musical score file called “menu_score” on this menu.

6. Insert a return to main menu button on this menu.

7. Insert a text box and write a one-paragraph overview of the buttons and links that are included in this menu.

8. Insert three submenu buttons with transitions to:

3 Information Submenus

• Favorites: “My Favorites”. Include information about what interests you and how you spend your free time. Write at least 3 paragraphs.

• Goals: “My Future Goals”. Include information concerning your goals including plans to become one of the following: artist, art critic, art historian, art collector, art gallery owner, or philosopher of art (even if you don’t plan on becoming one of these). Write at least 3 paragraphs.

• Video Resume (see below)

9. Include back buttons to the “My Information” menu from each of these submenus.

Self Portrait

1. Use the digital camera to take a still picture of YOU or bring in a picture of you to scan.

2. Name the file “yourname_portrait”.

3. Save this file into your “images” folder inside the “portfolio” folder.

4. Insert the image onto the background of the video resume submenu.

Video Resume

Write your resuming using Word. Save the file into your documents folder as “yourname_resume.doc”. Include the following personal and professional information:

• Objective

• Activities

• Education

• Skills

• Work Experience

• References

• Volunteer Experience

Next, video record yourself explaining the information on your resume as if you were speaking directly to a potential employer. DO NOT SIMPLY READ YOUR RESUME WORD FOR WORD ON CAMERA. Consider this video presentation a pre-interview for a real job. Capture and edit your video resume. Place a button to your completed resume on your Information submenu.

Part D: Add DVD-ROM Content

1. In iDVD go to Advanced > Edit DVD-ROM Contents…

2. In the DVD-ROM dialogue box select Add Files…

3. Navigate to your documents folder and select your “yourname_resume.doc” file. Click Open.

4. Select Add Files… again. Now select your first semester web portfolio. Click Open.

Part E: Burn your DVD portfolio

1. When you are finished, and you have completed the grading rubric check sheet you may burn your disk.

2. Open iDVD.

3. Insert a blank DVD-R.

4. Select File > Burn DVD (+R) or click on the burn button.

5. The disk will eject automatically when the burn is complete. Make sure you write your name and period number on the DVD with a sharpie.

    Wow, I totally want to do this now...but want to make sure my portfolio is up to snuff so that the DVD itself would just be the tip of the iceberg on professionalism. Thanks for the article!
