Before taking an image into photoshop and clicking “desaturate”… try this:

Go to your channel mixer (Under ‘Image” in adjustments)

Start with
55% red
25% green
15% yellow

(I keep constant at 0% but that’s me)

THEN hit monochrome… you may have to “tweak” those percentages a bit to fit your image but it’s a good starting point.

Now once you’re happy with the outcome try adding film grain in filters to give more of a film “feeling”. I’ve also added noise to some… again; this is all a matter of taste.

In CS3 using the Black and White image adjustment gives you a little more control in that you are not only able to adjust the channels RGB but also yellow cyan and magenta. All adjustments should be made for personal preference.

This works good. I like to desaturate though and lighten then go to color range and add only red to my midtones.

Good tip, did you mean blue instead of yellow? When I go to that menu, there is no yellow to adjust. Worked great thanks!

Chocolate Rabbit Meltdown
A chocolate rabbit is shown melting three times. While humorous, the controlled color palette and slow minor tones of the background make for an almost soothing display of slow destruction.
