When does Photography become Art and not just a Snapshot? The difference is: Anyone can take a snapshot, say even a 5 year old. But Art thru Photography takes number one: Talent, Design principles and Composition. I've seen alot of snapshots, but little Art thru talent. Everyone seems to think because they take Photo's their Artists...not true. Personally I use photo work more as a tool for Art.work. I guess when you get down to it....beauty and Art is in the eyes of the beholder....Now of course this is just my belief, maybe not yours.....GalenPixler, creator and founder of Pix/Art Studio &  private Gallery, Oroville, Ca.

Galen...

I very rarely get baited by an obvious "trolling" thread... but you pissed me off.

You want the answer... the difference between photography as art as opposed to a snapshot... look at your own portfolios... those are snapshots... completely useless... hire a professional or get your work scanned. Images like that serve no purpose.

I know you'll contend "you're not a photographer"... I get it. I'm not a painter... so therefore I won’t go onto art threads and spew out some asinine critique generalizing that all painters’ endeavors are worthless

wanna troll some more?

Personally, I would like it if photographers looked at my work. I think formal art concerns cross medium boundaries. I took photography courses in college back in the darkroom age, and have studied its history. I have total respect for it as a form of art. I take photos, but don't consider myself a photographer in terms of being an artist.

I think Galen did refer to the skill it takes to be an artist with photography. He can defend himself, although he is fairly new to artbistro, so I won't say any more on that.

I live in Oroville. First time I heard it called Oreoville.

I did not mean to rain on your parade dude. I like and use photography alot in my own work. All photographers are not snapshot shooters. I was just trying to emphasize that. I have alot of friends I call artists that are protographers. I merely was trying to say that because you know how to use a camera don't instantly make you an Artist. The sam goes for painting. Just because you buy some paint and supplies doesn't instantly make one a Artist either. I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. Alot of things like composition, light, dark, proper angles and the like makes the difference between a work of art and a snapshot. I've been an Artist for over 50 years and do not claim to be a great artist. But in those 50 years  I have seen more snapshots than Art. And I've seen alot of cfrap painted that they call Art too. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck ya-know. And I'm sure you didn't either. I've been to college with a Art degree, taken Photography and liked it. But for me, and that's just me I use Photography as a Tool. Sorry....and it's Oroville, with Photo and Painting Artists...

You're not raining on my parade... and there are tons of crappy snapshots out there... I'll even go as far as saying many from Oroville... but you really can't say you use photography as a "tool". Photography is the process... the camera is the tool. It would be like saying I use painting as the tool. Other than that... why do so many people fall off turnip trucks... I hear that all the time... I'll assume there are no government safety standards when it comes to turnip trucks

So, then, can it be assumed that if elected, President Gio will confront the Turnip Truck lobby and introduce legislation requireing proper safety restraints on Turnip Trucks?

I am with Giovanni on this one.  I was rather miffed with the implied comment of photography being a snap shot.  Is there a difference?  YES.  Snap shots are not limited to the photographic medium.  Slapping paint on a canvas does not automatically make it art.

There is a great amount of ignorance on the part of many "self taught artists"... not all ... but many.  Many have not thoroughly studied their medium to get the desired result.  They have not studied composition, value, nor the color wheel.  The result is obvious.

Photographers such as Giovanni spend countless hours studying the subject and applying the above principles to their artwork and hence get the desired result.

Art is not tied to one form of medium.  The speed of the camera versus the time to apply paint does not determine Art.  The skill of the craftsman coupled with the eye of the artist... the spirit of the artist... that is what makes good art.

My opinion... take it for what it is worth.

Thank you Jon, when I first came on art bistro I looked at mostly photos, but now I look at Paintings 1st, photos second, for several reasons, but that's a whole other thread. and I enjoy painters reviewing my work too. There are some painters like Ellen for example that paint what I try to capture with photography. I respect her work and she enjoys a well done photo. Marty

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be.

I agree with Jon & Marty.  Good work is good work and the elements can certainly crossover.   I love to view great photography and I love when photographers view & comment on my work.
