Hi friends!

I'm facing a problem about my "future". I'm actually an art intern in Texas, my contract is ending on november 30th 2008. I don't want to renew my internship with my actual employer but I would like to stay in USA (I'm from France). My visa is expiring at the end of my contract, so I'ld have to go back to france right the way.

The reasons why I want to stay are because I love the culture, the way of thinking, the way of life of America, and also, it's hard to find a decent job in France...

I've been looking for a photographer job for few month now, but I had absolutly no returns. I understand that people don't want to go to the bother of doing all the papers for my "immigration". And I know that in photography everything works by contacts.

I've heard that I should register myself on PPA (Professionnal Photographers of America) to find better jobs. So I did but still doesn't work...

The other request I have is to relocate myself to the northeast area (for personnal reasons), which makes it even harder for me, being many many miles away...

So if someone could help me with advices on what to do, where to go, or even some contacts or offers, I would be more than thankful! Please!!

Hey Mathilde!

I'll ask around and see if anyone knows anyone who is hiring. The job market is pretty sketchy at the moment... I'm looking too... but I'm sure your talent will be recognized! Hang in there and keep shooting!

Here's what I'd suggest...Try getting into a graduate school in the area that you are interested in...That might enable you to extend your Visa...Course, the additional education would be helpful too...You may be able to teach a few classes and build your contacts through the University...Finding a job might be tough right now, so persuing more education at this point may be a good option...Good Luck!

I didn't think about that, it could be interesting. Thanks Blackkwolfe!

But still, I'll need to find a way to make money... I don't know exactly how it works here. If i go to an university, will i still have time to do little photography jobs?

Looking through your galleries, it's obvious you have a photographers eye and talent.  But in this day and age of digital, anyone and everyone thinks they are a professional photographer because the camera can do most or all the work (in their minds).  As you look for or establish your own dream job, It may be that you might try to find employment in another field (such as being an interpretor.  I'm assuming you can speak French.)

Oh, one other thing.  You might find that a foriegn newspaper or magazine might hire you as their photographer/journalist abroad adn they wouldn't have any problems arranging for your visa.

Hmmm.... what type of "job" do you want as a photographer. Consumer market, editorial, journalism, advertising.... need more to go on. Looking to shoot? assist? digital tech? The market is broad but the work pool is shallow. Where you start depends on the capital you have behind you and your work experience. Give us more to go on :)

Well I don't have a lot of professional experience. I just did many training while I was at school. Right now,  I just want to get my career started as a photographer, That's why it doesn't really matter what kind of job it is!

Once, I did a training with a collection photographer in a museum and i really loved it and also one in a photographic gallery, loved it too!! Find a job like that would be great but i don't think there is a lot of openings there... So anything else around photography would makes me happy. Well... Not everything either... I don't really want to end up at the photo lab of Walmart...

Because my biggest problem is to find someone who can afford to sponsor me for the immigration, etc.

And about a capital? I would say... none... That's why the university, as blackwolfe suggested me, is now out of my mind... I thought it would have been a great idea but when I saw the tuitions, I got scared!!

Helshawk, I thought about the foreign magazine and newspaper and I've been looking but I guess I didn't looked enough or in the right places, I didn't find a lot of them... And also, the other thing about it, it's that they usually hire freelance photographers, isn't it?

Thanks again to you for all your help!

"Real" or full-time jobs are hard to come by if you get too far from the portrait studio, staff at magazine or paper,  labs, or sometimes you can become a part of an in-house photo dept. for a retailer... but it takes a good bit of research to find them and get your foot in the door.

Freelance is wild and wooly if you don't have some financial standing... my husband and I are still at it, but it can have some stressful moments... when the phone doesn't ring for days and you can hear the crickets when your calendar is clear and you wonder..."Who did I tick off? Will I EVER work again?" A freelance life means maximum flexibility in what you will do, using all the talents you posess, especially when you start out. If you get a "day job" and then look for evening event work it can be a way to start a freelance career until you can let the day job go and look for all photo work all the time based on your capital from the event shooting (conventions, social events, bar mitzvahs, graduation do's and weddings etc.Unless of course you like event shooting, and then it can be a GREAT business if you build the right clientelle) But I won't kid you, freelance is a wild ride. Starting out my husband swung a hammer and if things get slow and an event comes along(he specializes in Advertising and Corporate work... shoots, digital techs and assists depending on the day) he will still take it. Do what you want to do when you can and what you can when you have to. Good luck:)
