Do you think a 4 day work week is good or bad? If we do this should we go back to the way thing where back in the day where every thing is closed on Sunday.

I work 7 days a week... I'm a photographer... it's the job

I think all artists work 7 days a week

Not for any freelance person, writers, artists, etc..however for the working public..it makes sense to work 4 days. This way they can have three days off to live and enjoy their life. This will give them more time for family and I hope personl growth.

Why do I paint?....because I don't have a tail to wag...arf arf

Unfortunately things cost too much.  I work whenever I can get it.

I worked the four day week thing back in the mid 80's, it was nice to have a long weekend, but I seemed to spend more money that when I was not on 4 days

I really think its six of one, half a dozen of another. Could be nice for some who have regular type of jobs and horrible for others (childcare issues etc.)

As for me, like Giovanni, as an artist, I work when I get it and so does my photographer husband. Not everyone has childcare issues to deal with, but for those of us who do... wow, to some extent it somehow rules your life. My schedule and career have been the flexible ones because bonehead that I am, I said I wouldn't have kids unless I could stay home with them atleast until they went to school and to be there for them most of the time after they get home from school as they got older. A few times it was a little lean or I thought about giving in but, luckily, my plan worked great for us in the end. Besides, although some men might be great stay at home dads (hats off to blakkwolfe and others like him) my husband is not one of those men. Great husband and father but  just not the  run the household type... not sure I'm great at a lot of it either, but I am better at it than he would be. I'm no Martha Stewart, but then again, I haven't been to jail either ;-)

What about retail and health care workers.... their schedules are weekly running disasters? Why they are such a mess seems to be a societal madness I simply do not understand.

Hmm, so I suppose it raises the question: if the "system" at large went to a 4 day week, would the schools change too? If "everything" major changed I could see the possibility of rediscovering "blue law Sundays" but otherwise the stress on the two-working-parent or single parent family,  working families would be too great by removing one of the two possible days available to shop etc.

In my old job.  I worked 4- 10 hour days had three days off.  Patrol works 4 - 11 hours days and has 4 days off. Some Departments have shifts of 3 - 12 hour shifts with four days off.   I think that's too long and fatigue sets in.  Finally there are those lucky firefighters who work 10- 24 hour shifts out of the month.

I've done the 10hr day/ 4days a week thing (except we didn't get paid for out lunch hour, so actually the day was 11 hours long...from 7AM until 6PM).  My commute is an hour and a half each way... so I felt like it was nothing but work+sleep for 4 days straight.  That sucked.  I like having at least a little bit of time for me-self and me-family.  Personally I would like to work on a milestone schedule.  "as long as this and this are done on Monday, I don't care when you come in or leave."  THAT would be cool.
