I don't need any affirmations.

I just want newly sober people to know that if I can do it so can you.

Well what is it that you do to maintain your sobriety?

Do you think it's enough?

I believe that you can get willingness two ways;

1.) pain and suffering.

2.) grace of God.

I choose to pray and meditate for grace of God today.

I also wanted to add this site I go to every morning for my daily readings;

http://www.ipass.net/a1idpirat/readings.html

This is what I do to stay sober on a daily basis.

The Five Basics,

1.) I pray for help to stay sober

2.) I read two pages of the Big Book (Alcoholics Anonomus)

3.) I call 2 sponsors every day

4.) I go to a lot of meetings, and do service work.

5.) I thank God for keeping me sober

I love A.A.

Congratulations!

I've heard there are 3 types of alcoholics:

  • Those who get drunk off 1 or 2 drinks

  • Those who have 1 or 2 drinks, then find it almost impossible to stop.

  • Those who have to drink first thing in the morning and for the rest of the day as well.

I'm the 2nd type.  All I have to do is choose not to drink and I'm fine, but if I get started, there's a good chance I might not remember going home.  As far as Bible verses, and I don't have a Bible with me, but I think it might be Ephesians 4:29, here's a good one:  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the spirit.  That's pretty good advice.

Congratulations! Sobriety's best reward is the abundant life you have without the destroyer. God bless you today and everyday you must struggle with yourself.

Each day is a gift, open it up and play with it!

"There by the grace of God go I"  Congrats on 2 decades of one day at a time.  I like the last comment  "20 yrs you must love more than yourself"  The truth doesn't always have to hurt!!!    I am just now getting my marbles back myself!!

Congratulations Bruce!!  I remember when I first got sober.  To know me now  you would not have believed I was the same person then.  July 1986 is my sobriety date.  The day I believe was the 26th, but I can't remember.  We wrote it down and my home group at that time went through some changes, even moved locations, and I changed home groups.  But you know, it doesn't matter because I am sober right now at this very moment and that is all that matters.  I truly am a grateful recovering alcoholic and my name is Connie.

I stay sober by doing 12 step calls, A LOT of praying; do a self check and, HALT, to make sure I'm not getting too

Hungry

Angry

Lonely, or

Tired, and

If I am these things then I do my best to do something about it.  I got sober because first I wanted to and by the grace of God I stayed that way for moments at a time.

I think of what would happen if I picked up that first drink.  I know I can't stop.  So if the thought to drink comes to mind I play tapes in my mind remembering what happens to me and know that this disease is progressive.

I remember the compulsive cravings and the obsession.  I don't WANT to ever go back there, ever.  This thought also keeps me sober.  I know God and my children wouldn't like it if I picked up.

At first I couldn't believe what I was hearing from people who have been sober for 12 years, 35 years, and so on.  I didn't think it was possible.  But I got an excellent sponsor and I was willing to go to any lengths to get sober.

I was and still am, Honest, Open minded, and Willing to gain sobriety and stay sober.  A.A., therapy, my counselors, ACOA, family, friends, and God help keep me sober.

Bruce, I'm glad you started this topic.  My sister died because of this cunning baffling disease.  I know I want to live sober, and when it’s my time, die sober.

Thank you again, and it is nice to see the courage you have to share your experience strength and hope to stay sober, and help others to stay sober by doing so. Congratulations again.
