Has anyone had experience with selling your photos or vector designs to a company, such as istockphoto that sells it for a royalty?

Well..... I wound up printing out the istockphoto.com guidelines for submitting my original  Illustrator artwork.

First, you have to take a test to show you understand the rules. Several days after I submitted my samples, they sent me a rejection email.

The rejection letter wasn't specific, but rather rejected my artwork in every single category and offered three days to submit new samples.

So... enough of istockphoto.com

i have never tried anything like that, has crossed my mind though. i do know of friends using their designs to create products for sale on cafepress.com, and they all seem to enjoy it. etsy.com is another site for artists to sell their work.
