Education for Graphic Designers?
Posted 4 months ago Right now I'm in an Associates program for New Media. I'm concentrating on things like web design and desktop publishing so I will have the technical skills needed for a career in graphic design. Before this I was in a Bachelors program, but had to transfer out of the uber-pricey private art school for several reasons.
My current concern is: Will I have the education I need with an Associates degree to break into the career path I've chosen?
My faculty advisor said this is a portfolio-driven business and, as long as I learn the skills and know how to utilize them, transferring into a BFA program after I get my two-year isn't necessary. He's seen my work and told me not to worry about it. But I've read a lot that claims that a four-year degree gives a boost to income and job selection. (It's not like I don't expect an entry-level job when I first get out there, but I want to make sure I will be able to manage in this field overall without permanently becoming "bottom of the food chain".)
Have any professional graphic designers out there noticed any big differences when it comes to eligible job seekers and their education? Has anyone gone back to school for this reason? I'm really curious, I'd love to know. |

| Posted 3 months ago Me personally I think you can be a famous Designer with no Career and just talent, though I believe a 4 year degree can earn you a bigger salary. Believe in yourself and believe me if they see you have talent it wont matter how long you been in school. Graphic Design is a Booming Business and there can be plenty of money made in it. But this is my opinion. |
