Why do people who see your art for the first time always go, "you know, I have a cousin who's a wonderful artist"?????

It's an easy conversation starter for people who have a limited knowledge of the arts and of a creative mentality.  I never take offense to such statements- I simply try to find a common ground with them that is more comfortable for them in conversation- then lead them back to the arts by associative reasoning.  Usually a pretty fun conversation.

I completely agree with sgibson. It's a great way to learn about people. They talk about their cousin and you talk about your work. It's perfect, because they actually end up loving your work more, and ask you to do a painting for them. The more you are open to educate people about your work, the more they will be open to it. I've had hours of conversation with people who I never thought would care about my work or what I had to say. I ended up selling two of my pieces and she had me paint three commission work. She related to my work, she understand it because she felt she was going through the same thing in her life. So, it was a great way of connecting with people outside of the art world. Isn't art suppose to be just that...not for other artist, but for other people who are not artists.

Be open and remember you are smarter then some of them...you never know what can happen.
