I'll be selling a number of originals, clothes, projects, and prints on my own slice of Etsy. It's like me but in boutique-form.

 Cool shop.

FYI - as an etsier I know that having a store announcement that is so long that none of your work shows until you scroll down will really deter customers from looking on.

Great work!

Looks good! Very curious about your experience with Etsy... it's been on my list of things I'm supposed to go check out for a while .... so how is it? Selling much etc? As a commercial artist for most of my life, I am just beginning to explore the business of fine art, for years it was great for family gifts etc. but kept my paying work more in direction of print advertising/graphics and illustration for publications, but honestly, tired of the aggravation/stress  - fine art world is a mysterious gem waiting to be discovered in these silver years (not a golden ager yet, lol) So recommendations, advice re etsy or anything else fine art for that matter? My ears are open :)

Etsy has a great community and great finds.

Would I quit my dayjob and do Etsy full-time? No, simply because shop upkeep for full-timers is 24 hours a day. In order to move enough product to keep a standard of living, etsy will eat your time - work time, spare time, play time - its all lost to promoting your shop. Even with all the promoting, if you don't have niche items then prepare to deal with dry consumer cycles (most people won't buy luxury items during a recession) which can last from weeks to months.

But Etsy is wonderful for the hobbyist.

I do side projects between gigs which I've never really been able to showcase before. With etsy, now I can showoff all the little coloring books I do, the line of familiars I work on, and stand-alone originals that I normally keep private. I can option them off for a nominal price and then answer questions as they come. I don't need to push push push in order to convince someone that they like my prints -- etsy shops allow them to see the work, can see the price and can decide for themselves if they want it in their house.

I would encourage any artist to try out etsy but I would stress that like all things its best to go to the party knowing someone - network with other artists before jumping in. Hope this helps, feel free to msg me here if you have any questions about setting up the shop or advice. If you decide to join etsy, you can add in a referral "simpson" which helps both of us and let's me know that you've got a presence over there.

been selling some jewels there pretty regularly.  i have to keep updating with fresh goodies.

there are many ways to get more exposure - by paying a bit extra.  i am going to give that a try.

next time i get some press - i am going to mention that website exclusively - and see what happens.

I love finding all the people with etsy shops. If you have one, let me know. If you are getting one, tell me so I can check it out.

Thanks for all the great info! It sounds like something I may be very interested in doing once we get the new studio up and running (primarily photo studio for my husband and rental studio/location/gathering venue... I am a business partner, but I will primarily still do most of my personal work from my home studio.)

A hobby... that might pay, like etsy, as a side to my work as retoucher and manager for the family business (which does bring financial gratification) sounds like the type of personal work gratification I just might be looking for. Not too interested in banging on art director's doors, interviewing, and putting together submissions anymore to sell illustrations... atleast at present, I think I have lost the fire of ambition in that area- or maybe I'm just in a funk, but prices for spot illustrations are the same as they were twenty freakin' years ago for pete's sake... don't mean to be a money grubber, but the price of everything else has sure gone up in the last twenty years ... continued devaluation of mainstream commercial art in our society.... if making art for pennies might as well be about subjects I like and in medias I choose, grumble, grumble...
