Can somebody let me know, or give me some links to some websites, about which art jobs are in most demand now or will be in the near future? I am currently in community college and will need to transfer over to a university soon. I am trying to find the best fit for me but am not exactly sure what to concentrate on. Currently I am contemplating Graphic Design. My passion is drawing, but I do like computers alot too so I am pretty much set on getting into something that utilizes computers. I am willing to expand and learn a little bit of everything, but as far as school goes I need to graduate with some type of degree in _______ (? something). I just wanna get the most out of my education and be able to find a secure job when I get out (I supposed Graphic Design was that). Truth is I am not willing to relocate neither... I live in S. Florida so I know the area plays a role too. Please helpppp... all advice is greatly appreciated :=)

If  you are looking for security, Art can be, but most often times not...As far as concentration...WEB, Web....Web....Did I mention the web? Yeah, I'strongly suggest persuing this aspect of graphics...Print/Pre-Press as it was is a dying medium, and it seems that in the near future everything will be web-based (or dual print/web)...Get yourself a copy of Cs3 while you are in school (www.academicsuperstore.com or at your campus bookstore)...and have at it...Suggest continuing to draw/paint or whatever you enjoy doing as those skills will always come in handy...perhaps someone will ask you to illustrate a childrens book or something....Check Monster and Career Builder often for graphic jobs that come up around Tampa (they'll all ask for Adobe CS in some manner or fashion, with almost everything looking for some web skills) Good Luck!!

I agree whole heartedly that the web is where the demand is at. I stumbled into art school knowing that I wanted to be a graphic designer with a concentration in interactive media. You can imagine what a revelation it was to figure out that what I love to do can also make money. I always had it in my head as a kid that your job had to be miserable.

I'm in SE Florida also. In June I received my certificate in Printing & Graphic Arts from McFatter Technical Center. I'm currently looking for work. From what I gather from the job sites, web design is king. In August I'm enrolling in on line computer classes in Dreamweaver from elearningbroward.com. The classes are under $130 each. You have to own the programs, purchase the textbook and have high speed Internet access. They tell me there are tutorials and a teacher available to ask questions. That isn't a substitute for a Bachelors degree, but rather a way to learn the additional softwares in a flexible time schedule. Their phone number is 754-321-5451

I have to concur with the web based arts..  anything related to technology and media..  video is another big one...  someone mentioned gaming..  that oo..  sadly, while some of us may like painting and drawing a lot, there doesn't seem to be the real demand (that I have seen) for work there...

I am a creative recruiter and i can tell you first hand that web skills are in demand.  if you know flash, html, css, actionscript - - you will be sought after.

In fact, if you have any real world experience and are looking for a job in the interactive realm (eg web designer, flash designer, web developer, web producer,, digital strategist, interactive project manager, interactive account manager, etc - - I have a lot of clients looking for people with skills in those areas.

The only catch is that you need to have had real world experience through an internship and/or previous job and/or have enough samples in your portfolio or on your website to showcase the spectrum of your skillsetYour samples do NOT have to be fully produced - - spec work is fine as long as it is good spec work and shows the spectrum of your design aesthetic/skillset.

If you have interactive/multimedia technical skills and real life experience and/or a portfolio with impressive samples, and are looking for a job in the tristate area - NYC, NJ, Westchester or Fairfield County, please email your resume and/or samples to me so we can connect.
