So, I am a musician among other things. Last week I played at a benefit for our local shelter house for women and children. A lovely day filled with music and speakers. I was excited because a local artist's guild, a place called The Creative Spirit Center, had offered to let us hold the benefit there. A wonderful building, filled with different exhibits of local artists works. When we were done with the days events our beloved artists guild slapped us with a bill for $300 for the use of the building. Saying that it was $50 for the first hour and $25hr after that. We asked if they could at least donate the first hour to the cause (explaining we were under the assumption that the building had been donated for the event) and they wouldn't budge. It took almost half of what we had raised for the womens shelter to pay the bill. This day was at no cost to them, even the employee that was there to oversee had donated his time.... the kicker is every musician involved that day had played a benefit to help the Creative Spirit Center about 3 years ago.... I feel like they are not really giving back to our community.... what do you think?

If you didn't sign any agreements, there's nothing they can do to collect the money legally.  The organizer can tell them to sue for it in small claims court if they want, but they'll probably still lose there anyway.  Unless you already gave the money to them, in which case you can't get it back either.

Either way - I'd never accuse them of helping the community!

What a way to ruin the spirit of a nice event!

You know what?  Every artist that played there should send them a bill for the usual fees.  Tell them your band get's $350 to play and they still owe you for plaing their venue.  Give them an official paper invoice.
