What about "Dry Spells?"

Posted 2 months ago I think to all of my fellow artists, I am going to take a break. Everything that I have done lately seems to be a second churn of the one before it. In other words, I have become bored. I was excited when I started painting in 2006 because it was all new. Before I painted palm trees and ocean before I lived here; it was wishful thining. Now that I am actually living among palm trees and ocean, it is nothing spectacular anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions. I neglected to mention also that we just had to put our family pet to sleep this week (after 16 years) and it hurts, and I am sad. Maybe I should just mourn her, and think about this some more. Take care all, Debbie Pounders (ArtistOcean)

| Posted 2 months ago You may want to check out a book called "The Artist's Way", That book has helped me and tons of others. It is by author Julia Cameron. Amazon.com probably has it and may be a way to at least preview it. I am very sorry to hear about your family member. That can be so painful, and that pain can be as useful as anything else in art. L If the foot of the trees were not tied to the earth, they would be pursuing me.. For I have blossomed so much, I am the envy of the gardens. Rumi |

| Posted 2 months ago Sorry about the family pet. I know from personal experience that can be a jarring, saddening, event. There are some other threads that address slumps, especially in the creative block forum, here is one: http://www.artbistro.com/topics/2272-how-do-you-get-yourself-out-of-a-creative-slump/posts I used to live by the ocean, and miss it (Santa Cruz-West Cliff). You have some strong work - I looked at your albums. If you take a break, maybe it is for the best. But if you are an artist, I hope it is a short one. Even if you live by the ocean, you have other choices of subject matter, although I imagine it would still have an influence of some sort. Try not to feel guilty if you take a break (although thats easier said than done). You could see art shows, catch up on some art history in the library, visit friends, take walks (maybe with a sketch book), and do other things to give yourself a second wind. The book lillyharms (good artist) recommended has some good insights. Sometimes even if I don't feel like working once I get started its OK. I think sometimes it helps to set aside a time of day to work no matter what.
