What instrumental music do you throw in while you are creating?

I like John Frusciante's solo instrumentals, and some Leo Kottke. As well as pretty much anything in the Vitamin string quartet series, because it's music I like without the distraction of the lyrics, which sometimes make me go too literal.

Is the problem that we can't see
Or is it that the problem is beautiful to me? - David Berman

Yeah, I definantly think that lyrics trigger a different side of the brain, sometimes distracting.

It really depends on my mood.... but hmmm, if I just stick to the instrumental idea we'll see what stream of conciousness flows here, I can create visual art with lyrics because I think I get so focussed I tune them out... but I can't write with them....too many words banging around to be productive :) So here I go, hang on tight and I'll see what CD's comes to mind:

Buddy Guy& Junior Wells on Alone and Acoustic, Yo Yo Ma with Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer on Appalachia Waltz,Maurice Andre', Miles Davis, Beethoven, Bill Evans, just about any Celtic Music especially if I'm doing calligraphy or other pen and ink work... George Winston, Wynton Marsalis, Shostokovich, Grover Washington.... oh and for DRAMA feeling, can't beat The Planets CD from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.. goosebump time. Wyndam Hill or Starbuck's samplers can be swell too.... I do like Leo Kottke too, fun stuff. hmmm, all for now, if I think of anything else I'll be back :)

Each day is a gift, open it up and play with it!

The Charlie Brown Christmas Album! Okay, it's not ALL instrumental, but it's real moody. Some is real upbeat, some is melancholy. I like that about Vince Guaraldi's music.

I like to throw in a little Zombi or some King Crimson. Sometimes I just throw on the free techno station on my ISP website.

Bond is really fun and lively, but if I want something chill and sort of pensive, I pull up Sigur Ros on iTunes and float away.

Sometimes I listen to 60's rock and roll, but when my mind gets to cluttered- I like Back, Betovan.
But, when I feel especially energetic, I stand up and attack my canvas using the 1812 Overture!

Shine On You Crazy Diamond, preferably from Side Two of Wish You Were Here, although there's one part with lyrics.

"The Rock" - from Quadrophenia (original album, not the soundtrack).  Blows me away every time I hear it.  And the last time The Who was transcendent (i.m.o.).

Russian Circles is a pretty heavy instrumental band, so it good for making some dark stuff, but anything ambient by Pink Floyd is good too!

  often prefer instrumental music.

non verbal and the right bpm can access the right part of my brain quickly and deeply, especially on those days when i'm feeling less than perfect.

I like classical Baroque music and house electronica.
