Not really a fan. Where I work, its still in use! We JUST upgraded to InDesign CS3! We are now using both for catalogs and trying to integrate InDesign into everything. This isn't hard to use, it just doesn't mix well with Illustrator and that makes it frustrating.

Adobe still sells PageMaker for the small-office user, who is less likely to have the cash or the need for a program like InDesign.

However, PM still runs on Macintosh in the Classic Environment, which is obsolescent (Mac OS X 10.5 does not have it), so this will give the user some sort of idea of how old PM is. Development ended with version 7 back around 2000. PM's true successor is InDesign.

That said, PM is a solid performer that would indeed be ideal for the small-office DTPer who does newsletters "on the side" and needs a basic program for such things, and the Mac user with OS X 10.4 and below who isn't planning to upgrade soon. I recently re-ran some student projects just for the fun of it and it accorded itself very well.

However, given the price, anyone considering kitting-up with a layout program should go straight on past this and look into getting InDesign. For a few dollars more you'll get a solid, current program. For those outfitting themselves with new tools, this is actuall a one-star review. For those for whom the choice is working with either this or MS Publisher, four stars.
