These pencils combine drawing and painting. There are several ways to use them. You can: draw and then paint over with a wet brush, dip the pencil into water and begin drawing for bold details, sponge down the paper to then draw and blend with the pencils, or you can sketch with several pencils on a separate paper to create desired color and then use a wet brush to dip into the dry pencil palette to paint with custom color.
These pencils are really great to do watercolors on location with as for sketching and then with water added later if no water is at location to complete the work. Good color and good blending capabilities
I really enjoy using watercolor pencils better than watercolor in the tube, and saves on clean up in the classroom. My students really doesn't consider using watercolor pencils painting and I understand where they are coming from.
I have used these for my self and students, but have not been impressed. After reading the previous comments, I might try them again.
Very neat!
A little tough to get the feel of this pencil when I first started using them. But they are fun to work with. I guess an advantage over water color paint is that you have more control with the pencil as opposed to a brush. - Brennan
Watercolour pencils are so much fun, and really great for traveling..... Great to do quick sketches with, then at a later time, can go back and add the water washes.... I find the Kimberly ones to be fairly inexpensive, but still have great pigment load.
