Description:

From the makers of Rembrandt pastels, Van Gogh colors are hard, square-shaped pastels that are easy to use and produce very little dust. Richly pigmented, they are ideal for sketching and tight drawing with the edge of the stick. Use the broad side to lay in large areas of color. Each stick measures 2-3/8" (60 mm) long and 5/16" (8 mm) square.

The are great hard pastels. They are very vibrant and great for blending. Since thet are hard, you can get fine detail if you create a point with sand paper or a knife. I don't suggest trying to use them with a small substrate; any bigger that 8.5 x 11 inches is a good idea. As with any pastel, they are very messy so prepare your work area and keep and eye on your clothes. The only reason not 5 star is that I can't really say I have tried too many other products.

I prefer softer pastels. These are almost student grade. Rembrandt is better for me, although I prefer even softer pastels than Rembrandt.

Great spread and texture in pastels, especially among other hard pastels. I combine them with the Van Gogh soft pastels as well and have had no issues with blending. Strong vibrant color with great contrast among the complimentary colors is also a bonus.

Very nice set got to work with these in a workshop at my states convention for Florida. A class by David Chang and these were really good at laying down color.
This name has been around a long time as I have a very old set that dates back to the early 70`s.

In my pastel work-- since I work on velour paper --I can apply many layers of color to achieve the desired tones, textures and effects. I like to lay foundation colors using soft pastels and then blend them with the harder Van Gogh pastels. This achieves an effect similar to oil painting with glazes. The Van Gogh pastels also enable you to apply nice sharp lines with the firm edge of the stick. He consistency of the Van Gogh pastels are always dependable never any hard little particles in them.
