8 mega pixels when 8 was high. I has plenty of manual settings for those who come from a film background. It also has very good presets for automatic photography for that quick shot. The optics are above average, but not great. The zoom range is very good with a 28 to 200 mm range. It also does stellar macro shots. The view finders are above average, but look at the histogram for a more accurate shot. One should do this for any digital camera as LCD monitors have a very limited range of gray scale and color.
