DALLAS, TX – Visitors to one part of the Dallas Museum of Art are welcome to touch – and even smell.
In the Center for Creative Connections, scheduled to open Saturday in the Dallas Museum of Art, visitors are encouraged to interact with art.
For instance, a magnifying glass over Gustave Courbet’s “The Wave” lets patrons get an up-close look at the thick globs of paint that Courbet used to create the dark ocean wave. Those looking at Janine Antoni’s “Lick and Lather” – which consists of two busts of the artist, one of chocolate and one of soap – can smell chocolate bar chunks and soap in compartments in front of the sculptures.
“It gives them a new way to connect with a work of art that doesn’t normally happen in art museums,” said Gail Davitt, director of education for the museum. She said that the new center is geared toward visitors of all ages, from areas for small children to programs aimed at adults.
Among the features of the 12,000 square-foot space are a work station for creating your own art with materials like pipe cleaners and cardboard, and a computer lab where visitors can research works of art and blog about them. Workshops, seminars and classes will also be offered in the center’s spaces.
