About Me:
Photobucket http://phoenixfirestorm.deviantart.com/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am a 24 year old, bright colored, Hawaiian shirt wearing student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. I began back in 2002 as a music performance major (Trumpet) for 2 1/2 years, then moved to Visual Arts-Undecided, then animation, and currently painting. Here I am, in 2008, still there. They don't teach you anything relevant to your degree at these institutions. They expect you to already have years of experience with these programs which cost an arm and a leg to buy unless you were one of those fortunate few who were able to download (illegally) these programs since you were like 8 years old. Honestly, if I were put on the job to train as an animator I probably could learn quite easily, but at school I am stretched 10 opposing directions that have nothing to do with my concentration. I looked up Disney for an internship. They expect you to work as a peasant in their amusement parks and then they, "might", allow you to have an internship. So, now, I am in painting just hoping to get a degree so I can leave this God-forsaken city and get on with my life. I have actually grown quite fond of painting. Everything is digital now and I am, predominantly, a traditional artist. Probably born in the wrong time period. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I do many different things. I paint, draw, create 3D paintings(sculpture-like paintings), minor sculptures, write poetry and working on book ideas, comic strips, and comic book. I also like to cook and prepare meals and make them look as professional as possible. Would love to learn how to make desserts. I like to make bright, colorful, and/or dramatic pieces. I deal a lot in detail. Would love to illustrate books, or work in comics, but comics might be a bit too competitive for me. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have all ways been an inspiration for me. I have been drawing them ever since I could hold a pencil. Self taught for most of my life. Most of the teachers I have had here don't want you to do anything original, they want you to conform to their standards of art which contradicts what they tell us in VIAR 101, such as copying a cubist painting and creating it in a 3D fashion out of styrofoam instead of creating an original piece. They force feed us that the Renaissance masters were the only masters and that to be truly be great, you must study every inch and detail of their pieces. You don't have to be a able to copy the Mona Lisa by Leonardo, or sculpt a Michelangelo. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Nobody cares about that. They are interested in what you, and you alone can do. Quite frankly, I see the old Renaissance masters as being boring. Sure their pieces are highly detailed and well painted, and that I could never reproduce such things, but I don't care and neither should anyone else. What matters is what we, as artists, can apply to paper or canvas, and what we can produce with limited materials at hand. To me that is what makes art, art. What comes from OUR hearts is what matters and no one else's.

I accepted the friend request before answering your question and now can't reply to the message, so I'll post it here. I paint over the inked line work and sometimes (if I had to make corrections on the inked piece) paint on photocopies (one advantage to that is the paint doesn't stick to the toner, so the ink lines stay fairly crisp). I most often use my acrylic paint thin, like watercolor, building up the color density slowly. I do have to do some ink re-touching after painting, but not too much.
