About Me:: Derrick was born on September 12, 1971 in Sta. Cruz, Manila. His Father, Reynaldo Ventura Macutay was an accountant and hails from Tugegarao, Cagayan Province. His Mother, Victorina Colminas Macutay, an elementary school teacher, hails from the Eastern province of Samar. Derrick is the eldest of four children. He graduated at the Pasig Catholic College, where he got both his elementary and high school diplomas, and continued his studies in Manila. He earned his college diploma at the University of Santo Tomas obtaining his Bachelors degree in Fine Arts majoring in Painting. After graduation he worked on several odd jobs as junior artist, Comics writer and illustrator, architectural renderer, background artist for big animation studios and children’s book/textbook illustrator and graphic artist. His biggest experience was being able to be an apprentice to long time and last assistant and protégé of Carlos v. Francisco, Mr. Salvador Juban, learning the tricks, advice and aesthetics of the masters. His first mural was for his alma mater, Pasig Catholic College but Derrick has done several big wall murals for different individuals and institutions such as the eleven wall murals for Union Church in Makati. Pool area murals for the Faith Academy in Antipolo and murals for Villa Ilongga Restaurant. Other major body of work with his Ninong, Mr. Juban, were the Batangas murals for Mr. Vic Puyat, Mural for the Museong Pambata and the recent mural for PGH. Derrick also worked on the major statue designs for the Dipolog Rotonda monument With good friend Sajid Imao working on the sculptures of the statues and Arch. Manifelmo Dacanay spearheading the project. He also won the grand prize for the Filipino Hawaii Centennial Mural contest and unveiled his largest canvas to date, depicting the 100 years of Filipino Migration to Hawaii, measuring 8 ½ feet by 12 feet. It was unveiled at the Ballroom of the Filcom Center in Waipahu, Honolulu Island, Hawaii last Dec 16, 2006. Derrick is married to Marycris Santos Macutay of Kalawaan and father to daughter Allysa Mae. When not at home or in his studio, you can also see him at the edge of the Pasig River, doing his favorite and therapeutically favorite past time, fishing.
