Personal
- About Me:
- In 2003 my work began as an investigation of memories and nostalgia. I drew inspiration from objects and photographs I found from my childhood. I experimented with color, texture, and materials to discover what would work best to communicate my concepts. Through questioning myself, observing my progress, and becoming comfortable in taking countless risks with materials my work evolved. Gradually patterns; both visually and conceptually; began forming in my work. I continue to allow each painting to inform the next. I am still growing as an artist, but I’m certain that I will continue to move forward and break barriers. My work has a central theme of remembering and the recollection of memories and how they can sometimes seem fragmented. Every painting tells its own story in a detailed way while remaining cohesive as a collection. I use shallow depth of condensed layers and web-like patterns to expose and reveal crucial elements. My work has been described as “colorful abstract mixed media and collage images. These works offer up mysterious fragmented layers, which Kelly explains relate to memories, and how over time (and accumulation) some details are lost. She invites the viewer to sift through the images to compose (or discover) a narrative.” My initial process derived from old photographs, wallpaper, textiles, and architectural ornaments. I gained insight and influence in creating my own patterns and textures after looking at artists like Beatriz Milhazes, Valerie Jaudon, and Sue Williams. It is my belief that an artist must first learn the skills to create to the degree they feel necessary in order to make their visualizations a reality. By practice and exploration of materials, I feel comfortable, confident, and mature as an emerging artist. I have developed proficiency in combining sheen crisp layers, collage, and printmaking in order to create successful images that convey a sense of security, comfort, and nostalgia. It is my goal to expand my thoughts and philosophies about my own work and the work of my peers. I see myself growing more as an individual and discovering new techniques through collaboration and mixing media. I openly accept any form of criticism that would help me to grow as a practicing artist.
