Baltimore City is like many urban districts. They've done things which improve test scores but drop out rates are climbing due to increasing poverty primarily. Also, Baltimore ranks second to last for being segregated and poor compared to the rest of the state. Suburban areas in Maryland pay more. You need to be understanding with students to work here.
I agree with my colleague that you need a backbone. She's a good teacher.
I believe that if something is not broken, you shouldn't try to fix it. The public school system here in Baltimore rarely takes its cues from other successful schools systems. As a machine, it seems to seek out ways to make the easiest tasks impossible, like educating and uplifting our children.
Have a strong backbone and some advil. You'll be in for a treat. Realize that you cannot save every child and do your best to impart as much knowledge as possible without losing your enthusiasm or drive.
